The major red‐violet pigment of Phytolacca decandra L. (pokeberry), called phytolaccanin, has been isolated and crystallized. The elementary analysis, the UV.‐, visible and 1R.‐spectra and the electrophoretic as well as the chromatographic behaviour on paper indicated its identity with betanin, the pigment of the red beet.
