The growing complexity of the problems the chemical engineer faces nowadays calls ever more urgently for the development of systematic methods yielding not just a random solution, but the best possible or optimal one. Our endeavours to find an adequate too for this purpose have drawn our attention to the theory of dynamic programming developed some years ago by Bellman in the field of operational research. In this paper the method is explained by means of an example: the optimization of a cascade of continuous, stirred tank reactors with respect to yield, achieved in our case by optimal distribution of the total residence time between the vessels.
