An apparatus has been developed for measuring the voltage at the terminals of the cell and the true effective voltage of the electolysis in function of the current. The intersection on the x axis of the extrapolated curves gives very clearly the decomposition voltage. The method is applied successfully to cryolitic solutions of Al 2 O 3 , Ta 2 O 5 , Nb 2 O 5 and V 2 O 5 .
