The structure IVa, proposed by J AFFÉ , G ARDNER and S I ‐J UNG Y EH for the conjugate acid of trans ‐azobenzene, is shown to be untenable. Experimental evidence of various kinds proves that in the conjugate acids of cis ‐and trans ‐azobenzene the cis ‐ and trans ‐configurations are retained.
