Addition of azide ions considerably slows down the oxidation of ascorbic acid by nitrous acid. At a pH of about 2 an approximately 10 fold excess of hydrazoic acid over ascorbic acid changes the rate law found in part III into\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm v = k}_{\rm 3}^{{\rm oH}}\, {\rm [H}^{\rm + } {\rm]\, [HNO}_{\rm 2} {\rm]\, [Asc}^{\rm o} {\rm]}{\rm .} $$\end{document} This is identical with the rate law found in 0·1 to 0·5 M acid (part II); the agreement in the value of k 3 oHfound by both procedures is satisfying.
