In 0.1 to 0.5 M perchloric acid the oxidation by nitrous acid of the two reductones, ascorbic acid and phenyl hydroxytetronic acid, follows the rate law\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm v = k}_{\rm 3}^{{\rm oH}} {\rm [H}^{\rm + }\, {\rm] [HNO}_{\rm 2} {\rm]\, [red}^{\rm o} {\rm]}{\rm .} $$\end{document} k 3 oHhas been determined for both reductones in aqueous dioxan and for ascorbic acid in water.
