Oxidation of ascorbic acid by nitrous acid at pH 0 to 5 follows the stoechiometric equation:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm ascorbic\, acid + 2\, HNO}_{\rm 2}\, {\rm = dehydro-ascorbic\, acid + 2\, NO + 2\, H}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}{\rm .} $$\end{document} This was shown by potentiometric titration of the ascorbic acid and by gas analysis.
