Oxidation of N‐(γ‐dimethylaminopropyl)‐iminodibenzyl hydrochloride (Tofranil®) with molecular oxygen in the presence of Fe 2+ salts, ethylenediamine‐tetraacetic acid and ascorbic acid leads to N‐(γ‐dimethylaminopropyl)‐2‐hydroxy‐iminodibenzyl in moderate yield. This product is identical with a metabolite of Tofranil® isolated from human urine.
