The relative basicities and the spectral shift of the band II on protonation of 29 azo‐azulenes have been measured in the system methylisobutylketone/sulfuric acid. Comparison of these data with those obtained previously in the system ethanol/hydrochloric acid indicates that they are largely independent of the solvent system used, and may therefore be correlated with characteristic values obtained from molecular orbital models.
