Isooctane and other hydrocarbons inhibit the succinic‐cytochrome c reductase of a mitochondria preparation. This inhibition is not only due to the lipid solubility of these substances, but is caused, moreover, by other structural properties. A distinct dependence on the length of the side‐chain has been observed. Side‐chains with 6 to 7 carbon atoms are the most active ones. Introduction of a hydroxyl group into the n‐alkanes decreases the inhibitory effect, whereas it is increased by bromine substitution.
