The dielectric behavior of solid and liquid cyclobutanone in the frequency range from 40 kcps to 250 Mcps at temperatures between − 75° and + 55° C has been investigated. The substance melts at −52° C and shows no indication of free orientation in the solid state. The dipole moment, calculated from the liquid phase dielectric constant by Onsager's theory agrees reasonably with the Debye theory value determined form benzene solutions. The relaxation time at 25° in the liquid state is approximately the same as for the next higher homologues.
