The synthesis of a bis ‐ homo ‐gramicidin S, cyclo ‐(Val‐Lys‐Leu‐Phe‐Pro) 2 , 2HCl, H 2 O ( L‐L‐L‐D‐L ) 2 is described. The product differs from gramicidin S in that the two residues of L ‐ornithine are replaced by residues of L ‐lysine. This change implies no significant loss of antibacterial properties. The antibiotic activity of gramicidine S is thus not due to the presence of the uncommon amino acid L ‐ornithine.
