Polystyrene sulfonates can be used for the fractionation of protein mixtures. Under optimal conditions 1 mole of polyelectrolyte will precipitate 10 moles of human γ‐globulin. With bovine serum albumin no precipitation occurs under the same conditions. This provides a basis for the separation of γ‐globulin from serum albumin.
