Isozeaxanthin (4,4′‐dihydroxy‐β‐earotene) has been synthesized following the scheme C 19 + C 2 + C 19 = C 40 , starting with dehydroretro‐C 19 ‐aldehyde. Two isomers of the intermediate 15,15′‐dehydro‐isozeaxanthin were isolated and therefrom two isozeaxanthins obtained which are believed to be the racemate and the meso form.
