Thebaine (VII) has been degraded to (−)‐cis‐[2‐methyl‐2‐carboxy‐cyclohexyl‐(1)]‐acetic acid (III), thus providing experimental proof of the absolute configuration of morphine, thebaine and related alkaloids.
