Six aromatic aldehydes (benzaldehyde, cinnamaldehyde (trans) α‐naphtaldehyde, β‐naphtaldehyde, 9‐phenanthrenaldehyde and 9‐anthracenaldehyde) have been polarographically investigated in Britton ‐ Robinson buffers containing 50% ethanol, over the range of pH = 2 t o pH = 13. It is shown that the characteristic half‐wave potentials and E   ½ (1)0and E   ½ (1)* may both be calculated a priori by zero th order MO theory.
