The reaction of phosphoric anhydride with H 3 PO 4 , Et 3 PO 4 and alcohols proceeds by stages, the P‐O‐P‐ functions becoming less reactive with the diminution of the number of ‐O‐P groups fixed on each P. These reactions are considered to proceed by primary addition of a proton on to the hemipolar oxygen of a PO 4 group; at any rate the reactions of phosphoric anhydride with esters and alcohols are slowed down by additon of tertiary bases.
