The reaction between amines and thiolcarboxylic acids and their esters in dilute aqueous solution serves as a model for the biological acylation with coenzyme A. Constitutional influences and the influence of pH on the yields of acid amides are discussed in terms of a hypothesis concerning the mechanism of the reaction.
