A university's involvement in the stewardship of its place on earth may lead to a healthier environment, but, more important, it offers extraordinary opportunities for student learning. An Indian effigy mound in the shape of a bird, high on a hill overlooking Lake Mendota, is one of several ancient mounds preserved on the University of Wisconsin‐Madison campus. Built an estimated 500 years ago by ancestors of one of today's Wisconsin tribes, it symbolizes the deep and lasting relationship between people and the land. It is a reminder of the timeless need for stewardship of the place that, for now, is home to the university.
