Contemporary organizational theory is not providing the kind of guidance that it could and should for practitioners in higher education, as well as in other organizations. The author suggests that the issue of goals should be reintroduced into organizational theory, that certainty is just as important as uncertainty, and that it is misleading to conceive of higher education as a loosely coupled organizational form.
