The Supreme Court's recent Bakke decision clearly stated what institutions could not do regarding the use of race and ethnicity in admissions. Several institutions have developed alternative admissions policies which, while not entirely color‐blind, focus on assessing individual applicant disadvantagement rather than ethnic or racial group membership.
