This article describes a six‐year experience of psychiatric consultation in Padua Geriatric Hospital (Italy). Motivation for the request for psychiatric treatment, diagnosis, recommended treatment and compliance with it by the geriatric medical staff are reported. The authors stress the radical change in the activities of the consultants since the establishment in 1986 of a new psychogeriatric unit, probably still the only such unit in formal existence in Italy. The service offered by the team thus underwent considerable innovation, leading to substantial modifications in treatment and, especially, to a reduction in the duration of hospital stay of patients admitted to the psychogeriatric unit.
