Informed by a labelling theory perspective, the authors examine the difficulties in diagnosing depression in elderly persons. Two popular diagnostic tools, the DSM‐III and depression scales, are used to illustrat the value judgements, theoretical biases, and insensitivity to geriatric norms that underlie the diagnostic decisions. The implications of these problems are discussed.
