The aims and experience of work in a specialist memory assessment clinic are described with reference to the first 100 patients attending the service. Fifty‐one patients were found to suffer from dementia and a further 26 from mild but significant memory disorder. The open referral system proved a relatively efficient way of identifying patients with mild or early dementia of Alzheimer type.
