The setting up a support group for depressed elderly patients on discharge from hospital reduced the re‐referral and readmission rate for these patients as compared with a control group not offered this therapeutic intervention. Further studies are required to substantiate this finding. However, there are many apparent clinical advantages of running such a group and this therefore should be considered as a practical form of intervention with the depressed elderly.
