Abstract Activation and proliferation of glial cells are common events in the pathology of the nervous system. Although we are only beginning to understand the molecular signals leading to glial activation in vivo, there is increasing evidence that growth factors and their receptors may play an important part. In this paper we summarize the data on the pathophysiology of glial growth factor receptors and their ligands in the central and peripheral nervous systems. © 1994 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
