Three different samples of families with asthmatic patients, the German data set and the CSGA data set subdivided into Caucasian and African American groups, were analyzed using the maximum lod score statistic. Although different scores were obtained in each sample, the Wald's likelihood homogeneity test did not reveal any significant genetic heterogeneity. This may be due to the very large variance of the model‐free linkage statistics. © 2001 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
