The effect of dichotomizing a continuous phenotype in linkage analysis of a simulated oligogenic trait is explored. We conclude that dichotomization does not in itself preclude the detection of loci which account for as little as 16% of the genetic variance of the disease. The effects of inclusion of known covariates and quantitative trait linkage analysis are also discussed. © 1995 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
