In order to implement construction projects responsibly and at the same time efficiently, intelligent, multi‐project material flow management is becoming ever more important. At the Brenner Base Tunnel, material excavated from the tunnel and geogenic fill was processed for use as concrete aggregates. One part of this processing was the separation of the finest grains by washing the material. This however produced a considerable quantity of sludge, which was to be dewatered immediately after the washing. The article describes the sludge dewatering in geotextile tubes. In addition to the application example from the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel, the findings from this project have also been applied to optimise dewatering systems in the original application area of cleaning up waterways. Finally there is a brief outlook of current research results regarding the use of the dewatering system for used bentonite suspensions in specialised civil engineering.
