In an industry that has witnessed little change in its basic organization and structure for over a century, gas distribution utilities have no effective replacement fuels for natural gas. If proposed state decarbonization initiatives include bans on combustion of fossil fuels, it may well mean the end of the industry as we know it. And the impact could be devastatingly costly.
