In this contribution strain gage investigations regarding zero‐point stability in fields of monitoring and the application of strain gages in material mechanics are presented. The resistance‐strain‐relation is detailed and derived in fundamental considerations for applications with small as well as large deformations. Error‐inducing factors are demonstrated and solutions of minimizing or eliminating these variables are presented. Concerning monitoring of structures, zero‐point shift effects are the focus of this paper. Experimental examples of strain gage applications demonstrate the consideration of the specific methods to achieve results with high reliability and accuracy.
