We show that the nonlocal model for infinitesimal elasto‐plasticity with nonlinear isotropic hardening proposed by Gurtin and Reddy in Continuum Mech. Thermodyn. 21 (2009) can be written as a model of monotone‐gradient type, and we introduce a discrete primal‐dual formulation for the corresponding incremental problem which allows to use standard return mapping algorithms (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
