We model and analyse the single‐phase flow in a petroleum reservoir by taking into account a nonstandard energy equation. The numerical approximation is based on Raviart–Thomas mixed finite elements and a code is developed and validated. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
