The behaviour of space–time variational‐multiscale discretizations is investigated using a moving‐wave solution of the one‐dimensional viscous Burgers equation. Effects of spatial discretization parameters are demonstrated using time‐converged numerical results. Two approaches for estimating implicit subgrid‐scale energy dissipation are described, and the dependence of implicit dissipation on spatial discretization parameters is examined.
