Volatile components of Catharanthus roseus , obtained by water distillation of leaves and industrial marcs (plant residues) were analysed by GC–MS. This study allowed the identification of 76 compounds. The major substances were represented by a homologous series of alkanes, alcohol, aldehydes, ketones, fatty acids, fatty acid esters, terpenoids and phenylpropanoids. They are newly identified in this species and most of them have not been reported previously in the family Apocynaceae. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
