A well‐functioning sense of smell is essential not only for human wellbeing and the quality of life, it is also important to protect the organism from harmful influences it is exposed to, such as gas, toxic agents or rotten food. Various drugs interfere with human olfaction and are able to elicit olfactory dysfunction, but little is known about the underlying mechanisms. To date, a wide range of drugs have not been sufficiently investigated with respect to their impact on olfaction. This review provides an overview of drugs that have been identified as inducing olfactory disorders and discusses underlying causes and mechanisms.
