Thymus × viciosoi (Pau) Morales (= Th. bracteatus forma viciosoi Pau; Th. Variabilis Hoffmanns. et Link) is a hybrid of Th. Pulegioides L. and Th. Zygis L. ssp. zygis , which was not known to occur in Portugal but was recently collected in the Serra da Nogueira, the northeastern mountainous region of this country. The hybrid showed intermediate morphological features of the parental species: hairy stems only on the angles and some leaves not revolute, with globular glands beneath, which are typical features of Th. Pulegioides ; or some leaves revolute, calyx 3–4 mm long, with the superior teeth up to 1 mm, not ciliate, and the calyx‐tube 1.5–2 mm long, which are features of Th. zygis ssp. Zygis . The essential oil of the hybrid also possessed an intermediate composition compared with those of the parents. In that area of Portugal, the oil of Th. pulegioides is of a thymol‐type and the oil of Th. zygis ssp. Zygis is of a carvacrol‐type. The essential oil of the hybrid is a thymol/carvacrol‐type oil.
