The essential oil of the aerial parts of Artemisia moorcroftiana Wall. has been investigated by a combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. This essential oil possesses a penetrating herbaceous‐green odour. The main constituents of the essential oil are β‐pinene (7.7%), 1,8‐cineole (5.8%), artemisia ketone (10.2%), α‐ and β‐thujone (12.8 and 4.0%), camphor (5%). Major components of the sesquiterpenes are germacrene‐D (2.3%), ( E )‐nerolidol (2.6%), vulgarone B (α‐longipinen‐1‐one, 2.6%) and a new sesquiterpene alcohol α‐longipinen‐7β‐ol (1.4%).
