Mentha × verticillata clone 7303 (38% menthofuran, 20% menthol, 9% limonene) was crossed to Mentha spicata L. (40–50% carvone). This cross produced a PO–F 1 population particularly rich in piperitenone oxide (62%). Backcrosses of the PO–F 1 hybrids to the M. spicata parent produced a ratio of 1:3 carvone‐odoured to non carvone‐odoured individuals; 1:3 piperitenone oxide‐odoured to non piperitenone oxide‐odoured individuals; 1:7 ratio of sesquiterpene‐odoured to non sesquiterpene‐odoured individuals and a 1:15 ratio of pulegone‐odoured to non pulegone‐odoured individuals, suggesting for the PO–F 1 hybrid the genotype ‘ii, lmlm, cc, cc, ArAr, PrPr, PsPs, Psps, RrRr, rsrs, oo, oo, EE’. The sesquiterpene individuals almost completely lack monoterpenes.
