Gas chromatography‐ion trap detection was studied using lavandin abrialis oil as a complex natural mixture. The essential oil was pre‐separated by column chromatography and the two fractions collected were analysed by GC‐FID and GC‐ITD. The gas chromatograms obtained by these detection methods were comparable. The mass spectra recorded by GC‐ITD were influenced by the absolute amounts of the compounds, and some examples are given to illustrate this phenomenon.
