The effect of different adsorbents on the production of volatiles by the ascomycete Hypomyces odoratus G. Arnold was investigated. The adsorbents used enhanced this production when they were applied to the culture medium. The highest increase was found for Amberlite XAD‐2 (30 times) and for the weak‐acid cation exchanger IV (27 times). The composition of the mixture of volatiles was hardly affected. By applying Amberlite XAD‐2 into the headspace of the cultures the total amount of volatiles was also increased. In this case GC analysis revealed a marked increase in the amount of the more volatile components.
