In November 1985, a batch of the Wenzhou honey variety of oranges from China (Linhai County, Zhejiang Province) was processed at a Sicilian citrus factory using an Indelicato ‘pelatrice’ extractor. The essential oil extracted by this process has a quite different bouquet from that normal in the essential oils of sweet oranges, being reminiscent of the essential oils of mandarins and clementines. The volatile fraction of this oil was studied using chromatography on a neutral alumina column, gas chromatography with SE 52 capillary column and mass spectrometry: its composition has been compared with that of the essential oils of sweet oranges, mandarins and clementines.
