The Marchantiophyta (liverworts) contain a cellular oil body and produce a number of aromatic compounds and terpenoids, several of which show interesting biological activity, such as allergenic contact dermatitis; cytotoxicity; insect antifeedant activity; insecticidal, piscicidal, antimicrobial and antifungal activity; inhibition of nitric oxide production; and neurotrophic, anti‐HIV, anti‐obesity and muscle relaxing activity. The chemical diversity of liverworts and chemical structures of several bioactive compounds and their partial synthesis are reviewed. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
