New branched unsaturated and saturated aldehydes and related alcohols were identified in a solvent extract of freshly grated lemon peel by GC/MS‐analysis: ( E )‐2‐methyl‐2‐heptenal, ( E )‐2‐methyl‐2‐nonenal, ( E )‐2‐methyl‐2‐undecenal, 4‐methyl‐nonanal, 4‐methyl‐undecanal, 4‐methyl‐nonanol and 4‐methyl‐undecanol. Their structures, established from their mass spectra, were confirmed by synthesis and the organoleptic descriptors are given. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
