Volatile oil of Rhizoma polygonati (the rhizoma of Polygonatum sibiricum Delar. ex Redoute ), was obtained by simultaneous distillation–solvent extraction (SDE). Then the essential oil was analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS). Forty‐two components were identified, constituting approximately 96% of the oil. The main constituents of the essential oil were palmitic acid (50.9%) and ethyl linoleate (28.3%). Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
