The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of fresh leaves of the southern Brazilian species of the family Myrtaceae Calycorectes australis and Calycorectes psidiiflorus have been analysed by GC–FID and GC–MS. Thirty‐three compounds were identified in the analysed samples. C. australis and C. psidiiflorus were especially rich in sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons (43.6% and 40.7%, respectively) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (37.0% and 42.9%). Among the sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons, bicyclogermacrene was the major component in both samples (22.7% and 13.2%). The oxygenated sesquiterpenes were mainly spathulenol (13.7% and 11.6%), globulol (10.1% and 9.9%) and epi ‐globulol (6.1% and 9.5%). Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
