Abstract The essential oil samples obtained by hydrodistillation from aerial parts of Stachys schtschegleevii Sosn. and Stachys balansae Boiss & Kotschy (family Lamiaceae), were analysed by GC and GC–MS and 57 compounds, representing 99.5% and 86.5% of the total oils, respectively, were identified. Both essential oils were rich in sesquiterpenes (54.2% and 37.2%, respectively) with germacrene D (25.8% and 16.4%, respectively) as the major component. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
