The composition of the hydrodistilled essential oil of leaves of Pistacia lentiscus L. (Anacardiaceae) was analysed by GC–MS. Twenty‐seven compounds were identified, representing 58% of the total oil. α ‐Pinene (17%), γ ‐terpinene (9%) and terpinen‐4‐ol (12%) were characterized as the main constituents. The essential oil was tested for its antimicrobial and antimutagenic activity. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
