The essential oils of the aerial parts of four populations of Sideritis linearifolia collected in two different years were investigated by GC‐FID and GC‐MS. The qualitative composition was similar in all populations but their quantitative composition was quite different. A major difference occurs in the monoterpene hydrocarbons and diterpene fractions among the examined populations. Diterpene compounds were detected and identied for the rst time in the essential oil of Sideritis linearifolia and have been found to include higher percentages of sesquiterpene compounds. The relationship between variability of essential oil compounds and climatic enviromental conditions is reported. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
