The essential oil obtained from leaves of Antidesma laciniatum Muell. Arg. var. laciniatum (Euphorbiaceae) collected in Cameroon was analysed by GC and GC–MS. The oil was found to contain a majority of terpenoids (72%), with a relatively high amount of ester derivatives (40.9%). The two major constituents were found to be esters: benzyl benzoate (19.1%), which is responsible for the sweet balsamic odour of the oil, and geranyl acetate (14.9%). This volatile extract did not reveal important radical scavenging activity. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
